This vehicle was originally intended to be developed in parallel to the Centurion Mk III ARV, and benefited from improvements to the earlier FV219 ARV Mk I It is easily distinguished from the Mk I by the long sloping glacis plate.

Until the introduction of the Challenger ARV, Rhino, this was the most powerful recovery vehicle used by the British Army and first entered service in 1960.
